London girl Madge Syers skated to a gold medal in the 1908 London
Olympics - and put women's skating firmly on the map.First though, she
had to compete in the all-male world championships - and throw off the
restrictions of full-length costumes.Florence Madeleine Cave was born
in Kensington, London, September 16, 1881, one of 15 children. By the
time she was a teenager, Madge was a fixture at the Prince's Club in
Kensington, where she was natural on the ice.Back then figure skating
was a fairly restrictive sport and involved making a pattern in the ice
with skates and then tracing back over it. In the modern era
Olympic gold has been won byJeanette Altwegg, John Curry, Torvill
& Dean and Robin Cousins. Ice Skating Governing body :National Ice Skating Association

magical atmosphere of London this Christmas. Open from 10am to 10pm

and authentic German
Christmas Market with over twenty five separate wooden

For
the past 900 years the Tower of London – Her Majesty's Royal Palace and
Fortress on the Thames - has been the setting for some of the most
significant events in British history. As well as being a state prison
and place of execution, the Tower has been host to an arsenal, royal
mint, royal zoo and jewel house. Now, following hugely successful
Christmas and New Year Season Ice Skating seasons over the last couple
of years, the Tower of London will once again be host to a magnificent
real-ice rink situated in the dry moat beneath the Outer Curtain Wall
of the Tower of London. The ice rink has a capacity of 250 per hourly
session. The Cafe Ice alongside the ice rink (no entrance charge) will
serving warming drinks and festive snacks for those wanting to take it
easy and relax after their skate or whilst watching others take to the
ice.The Tower of London has to be the most impressive and
best-preserved medieval castle in any European capital. In 1988 the
Tower of London, including its individual buildings which are
themselves of exceptional architectural and artistic significance, was
recognized by UNESCO as a setting of outstanding and universal value
and designated a World Heritage Site. In the years since its foundation
in the 11th century the Tower of London has stood as a vital symbol of
national identity. In Tudor days, when the waters of the River Thames
froze over, the Tower of London was a magnificent backdrop to many
Frost Fayres where hawkers would set up their stalls to sell
refreshments to those taking to the ice for fun and games. With the
creation of the outdoor ice rink for seven weeks this winter visitors
to the Tower of London will be able to experience a taste of these
historic frost fayres for themselves – a truly memorable festive
experience with the famous, and infamous, Tower of London as a
spectacular backdrop. don't miss out

Ice (www.streetice.co.uk/booktickets.php) The
rink in Chamberlain Square is surrounded by amazing Victorian
architecture. Breaking with tradition, the L-shaped ice surface is
synthetic, a kind of plastic composite. I was sceptical, but it is
surprisingly good. It feels funny at first, not as slick as real ice
but easier to skate on, and good for beginners.Off-ice facilities: next door, at
the German Christmas Market in Victoria Square, you can refuel with hot
food and drink, and do some last-minute shopping.
